Each night more than 21,000 children experience homelessness in New York City. In response, APBCo IMPACT NYC launched the Homeless Youth Legal Assistance (HYLA) initiative, an unprecedented partnership with Covenant House, The Door, the Urban Justice Center and the Department of Homeless Services to provide legal services to homeless youth in three public and two private NYC shelters.
HYLA provides pro bono legal services to homeless youth in three public and two private shelters in NYC. With the support of the Department of Homeless Services, nine law firms support these shelters, operating primarily on a clinic basis, while also taking direct referrals. We have provided two trainings for participating firms, and with the help of The Door, Covenant House and the Urban Justice Center, have created an interactive training and clinic manual.
