Volunteer Lawyers Needed for Deep Decarbonization Pro Bono Project
We are currently helping to launch a project for the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University that arises from a new book, Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization in the United States, edited by Professors Michael Gerrard and John Dernbach.   The book identifies well over 1,000 options to achieving deep decarbonization in the U.S—the reduction of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% from 1990 levels by 2050. The legal options identified involve federal, state, and local law, as well as private governance.
We are looking for other firms to join us in providing the pro bono legal services needed to turn the book’s recommendations into model legal documents. Lawyer’s are needed to draft model legal documents (laws, regulations, ordinances, lease provisions) that will be made available through an on-line clearinghouse, established and managed by the Sabin Center, for use by policymakers at the local, regional, state and federal levels.
The 34 individual topics addressed by the book relate generally to:
– energy efficiency
– conservation and fuel switching in buildings
– industry and transportation; electricity decarbonization
– fuel decarbonization
– carbon capture and negative emissions
– non-carbon dioxide climate pollutants
The table of contents of the book, listing each chapter, can be found here:

Participating firms can participate in two ways:
– Select a chapter: Select a chapter to take responsibility for prioritizing recommendations and drafting legal documents. (All chapters except 18, 28 & 29 are currently available.)
– Select a recommendation: Select particular recommendation(s) within a chapter to implement through drafting of the appropriate legal document.
Our lawyers are currently drafting legal documents for chapters 18, 28 and 29, and another firm has expressed an interest in chapter 9.
Please contact me at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more, or if you would like to join our launch event which will be held the morning of May 7th at White & Case in NY.
