FEDERAL COURT WRONGFUL DEATH CASE OPPORTUNITY AGAINST DHS FOR THOSE FIRMS WITH OFFICES IN SAN DIEGO I represented a client through Project Corazon in a remote bond redetermination hearing. The client, a 26 year old from El Salvador who is LGBTQ and had what we believed was a strong asylum claim, was released on bond from a detention facility in Youngstown, Ohio and intended to live with his sister in Queens, New York. Almost immediately upon arriving in New York City, our client was hospitalized. A few weeks later, he passed away from a heart attack. On his behalf, we are investigating a potential FTCA claim against DHS and collaborating on that putative case with a dynamic civil rights lawyer, Andrew Free, whose firm is here: https://www.immigrantcivilrights.com. That lawyer is overwhelmed with similar cases and in particular is looking for a firm to take on a FTCA claim with him that is pending in the federal district court in San Diego. This would be a great opportunity for an associate or two at your firm to gain significant federal court experience while helping the family of a very worthwhile client. If you have offices in San Diego and can help, please comment below or email me at [email protected] Thanks.October 20th, 2019
Innocence Project Screenings: I’m looking for Innocence Project chapters that offer case screenings to pro bono attorneys. We used to do them for the California Innocence Project and the attorneys really liked them, but we are conflicted out for a period. I’d appreciate other chapters that offer these pro bono opportunities. Many thanks in advance.October 18th, 2019
Denver: New Clinic Opportunity: The Rocky Mountain Children’s Law Center is starting a new juvenile criminal expungement clinic in Denver. The only scheduled training is on November 1, from noon to 1:30 p.m. (details are in the attached). They have two clinics scheduled in November and hope to make this an ongoing project. If your attorneys are at all interested, even if they can’t staff a clinic in November, please encourage them to attend the training. Lunch is provided, so they should RSVP to [email protected] Thanks! Dorothy (p.s., our former partner is the ED of this great organization, so I told him I’d help spread the word.)October 17th, 2019
